Waakye leaves, derived from the millet or sorghum plant, are commonly used in West Africa, especially in Ghana.
Waakye leaves are not just for dyeing but are also deeply rooted in Ghanaian cuisine, used to give the famous Waakye rice its distinct color and flavor. In textiles, their warm-brown to pinkish dye represents earth, nourishment, and cultural heritage, symbolizing the connection between food, nature, and tradition.
The Natural Dyeing Liquid, extracted from Waakye leaves, is already prepared and ready to use. Simply follow these steps for a rich, earthy dye:
1. Prepare Your Fabric
- Use on light fabric only (white, beige)
- Wash the fabric to remove any residues.
- Soak it in a mordant solution (such as alum or vinegar) to enhance dye absorption.
2. Dyeing Process
- Pour the Waakye dyeing liquid into a container or pot.
- Submerge the fabric fully, ensuring even coverage.
- Let it soak for 30–60 minutes, stirring occasionally. For deeper shades, leave it overnight.
3. Rinse and Dry
- Remove the fabric and rinse in cold water until the water runs clear.
- Hang to dry in a shaded area to preserve the color.
700 ml is enough for 2 t-shirts, 1 sweater or 1 pair of trousers.
Now your fabric is beautifully dyed with natural Waakye leaves, giving a warm-brown to pinkish dye and reflecting the deep cultural heritage of Ghana!
